چکیده

Two state-of-the-art analytical compression after impact (CAI) modelling approaches are presented and evaluated for the problem of thin-film buckle-driven propagation a delamination in composite laminates. Characteristic phenomena investigated by evaluating behaviour energy release rate an anisotropic sublaminate above 2D embedded delamination. These characteristics include extension-bend, shear-bend bend-twist coupling as well contact base laminate. A holistic approach with aid detailed analysis deformation from artificial experiments finite element provide strong validation approaches. Suggestions made regarding methods suitable use initial aerospace structural design stage. It is found that models which capture mode-mixity post-buckled terms accurately will allow better decisions to be not overly conservative. Whereas methods, do account such mixity post-buckling, can nevertheless used damage tolerance.

Buckle delamination on patterned substrates

Lithographic techniques applied to a substrate prior to film deposition can create areas of low interface adhesion surrounded by regions of high adhesion. If the film is under compression and if buckle delamination is nucleated, conditions can be controlled such that delaminations are confined to the patterned areas of low adhesion. When the area of low adhesion is a strip, the width of the str...

Buckle-driven delamination of hydrophobic micro-, nano-, and heterostructured membranes without a sacrificial layer.

A fabrication method, based on thin film buckling, is demonstrated to form unique membranes that can be used for applications in optics and biosensing. This method should be applicable to a variety of material systems, which, along with its simplicity and compatibility with different film architectures, allows for widespread implementation.

Review of Damage Tolerant Analysis of Laminated Composites

With advanced composites increasing replacing traditional metallic materials, the material inhomogeneity and inherent anisotropy of such materials lead to not only new attributes for aerospace structures, but also introduce new technology to damage tolerant design and analysis. The deleterious effects of changes in material properties and initiation and growth of structural damage must be addre...

Prediction of Composite Laminate Strength Properties Using a Refined Zigzag Plate Element

This study presents an approach that uses the refined zigzag element, {2,2} RZE in conjunction with progressive failure criteria to predict the ultimate strength of composite laminates based on only ply-level strength properties. The methodology involves four major steps: (1) Determination of accurate stress and strain fields under complex loading conditions using {2,2} RZE -based finite elemen...

Strength Prediction in CFRP Woven Laminate Bolted Single-Lap Joints under Quasi-static Loading using XFEM

This paper is concerned with modelling damage and fracture in woven fabric CFRP single-lap bolted joints that fail by net-tension. The approach is based on the assumption that damage (matrix cracking, delamination and fibre tow fracture) initiates and propagates from the hole in a self-similar fashion. A traction-separation law (based on physically meaningful material parameters) is implemented...
